เวลาที่เดินไปตามห้างสรรพสินค้าหรือศูนย์การค้าต่าง ๆ ตามร้านสะดวกซื้อหรือร้านขายสินค้าประเภทต่าง ๆ ก็คงจะเคยเห็นเครื่องอ่านบาร์โค้ดหลาย ๆ รูปแบบที่มีวางให้เห็นกันอยู่ทั่วไป ซึ่งแน่นอนว่าการนำระบบตรงนี้มาใช้สำหรับธุรกิจต่าง ๆ เหล่านี้ช่วยให้พวกเขาทำงานได้สะดวก รวดเร็วและมีความแม่นยำในการทำงานมากขึ้น โดยเครื่องที่เอาไว้สำหรับอ่านค่าต่าง ๆ เหล่านี้ ถ้าหากลองเอามาแบ่งตามรูปลักษณ์แล้วหลัก ๆ ก็จะสามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น 5 แบบ ซึ่งมีลักษณะดังต่อไปนี้

2. แบบยึดติดฐาน – นี่ก็ถือเป็นอีกแบบที่มักจะได้เห็นกันบ่อยครั้ง แต่อาจจะน้อยกว่าเครื่องอ่านแบบด้ามปืน เพราะเครื่องอ่านประเภทนี้จะต้องยกสินค้ามาให้ตรงกับแถบไฟ ไม่สามารถที่จะเคลื่อนย้ายในการไปยิงบาร์โค้ดจากสินค้าในบริเวณต่าง ๆ ได้ จึงได้รับความนิยมน้อยกว่าการใช้แบบด้ามปืน
3. แบบที่รูดบัตร – ส่วนใหญ่แล้วการใช้เครื่องอ่านบาร์โค้ดในลักษณะนี้จะเป็นการใช้สำหรับการอ่านบัตรเครดิตหรือบัตรสินค้า บัตรสมาชิกประเภทต่าง ๆ ที่ต้องใช้การอ่านค่าเฉพาะเท่านั้น ไม่สามารถอ่านตามอำเภอใจได้ เพราะอาจจะทำให้ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับบัตรรั่วไหลเป็นได้
4. แบบ PDA Mobile – ปกติแล้วเครื่องอ่านบาร์โค้ดนั้นจะต้องผ่านระบบคอมพิวเตอร์ แต่ถ้าหากว่าต้องการที่จะใช้ระบบการยิงที่ห่างออกไปจากตัวคอมพิวเตอร์ นี่คือนวัตกรรมที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการนั้นได้เป็นอย่างดี เพราะว่าเป็นในลักษณะไร้สาย เมื่อยิงแล้วระบบจะถูกส่งเข้าคอมพิวเตอร์ในทันที
